Sri Lankan ladyboys have the option to change their legal gender but only if they’ve undergone gender reassignment surgery. But this surgery is still inaccessible to many. Sri Lanka still has still a long way to go when it comes to the rights and protection of LGBT.

Bhoomi Harendran is a transgender woman with one of the most prominent voices in the LGBTQ+ movement in Sri Lanka. Her advocacy helped in the creation of a Gender Recognition Certificate by the Sri Lankan Ministry of health which transgender individuals can use. She’s known to be the first trans woman in Sri Lanka to host a political talkshow in history. She has also been active in spreading awareness about HIV prevention in vulnerable communities in Sri Lanka.

LGBT Organizations in Sri Lanka: BRIDGE to Equality

Sri Lanka is home to several organizations that support and advocate for LGBT rights. Many of these organizations are voluntary and non-profit.

Jaffna Sangam

Jaffna Sangam is one of the few groups aimed ot make the LGBT movement localized. They provide a safe space for Tamil-speaking LGBT individuals. They want to provide equality and bring awareness to the local population. This gives more access to all LGBT individuals in the region.

National Transgender Network Sri Lanka (NTN)

National Transgender Network is dedicated specifically to the issues faced by the trans community. These include legal gender recognition and healthcare. They promote the well-being and mental health of Sri Lankan trans people.

The Women’s Support Group (WSG)

WSG was a Sri Lankan organization that helped lesbian, bisexual, and trans women. It started in 1999 but became inactive in 2012. Though the project is inactive, the organization provides a resource for LBT history in Sri Lanka.
