Terminologies like <a href=\"https:\/\/myladyboydate.com\/blog\/2020\/08\/kathoey-aka-the-thai-ladyboy\">kathoey<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/myladyboydate.com\/blog\/2020\/08\/what-is-a-newhalf\">newhalf<\/a>, transpinay, <a href=\"https:\/\/myladyboydate.com\/blog\/2021\/01\/are-bakla-and-ladyboy-the-same\">bakla<\/a>, etc. usually take the spotlight. However, it\u2019s important to know about these words\u2019 Indonesian counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Explore THE SECRET Lives of WARIAS in Indonesia\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IbTznAs7Uo8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason being is because, in Indonesia, the largest muslim country, <strong>it\u2019s very difficult to be a transgender woman<\/strong>. It\u2019s a country whereby Islam is practiced by the majority of the population. Tolerance and acceptance are harder to achieve in a nation like this. Open your heart, eyes, and mind to the waria of Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History of the word Waria in Indonesia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The word <em>Waria<\/em><\/strong> is a mix of the Indonesian words <em>wanita<\/em> (woman) and <em>pria<\/em> (man). It\u2019s also used to describe <em>biological men<\/em> who act or feel like a women (not drag queen). Other countries have terminologies popular for defining the third gender but waria is more definitive and appropriate to be used for a trans woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are no known resources of when and how the word originated. However, an ethnologist from Spain have records about discovering a transgender community in Bali under the name of Miguel Covarrubias. He said that the term was coined way before 1937, when he learned about warias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Sulawesi, the Bugis believed that five genders exist. These are the:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>cisgender women and men, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>transgender women and men, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/09\/what-is-queer-and-are-you-one\">genderqueer<\/a>, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/07\/all-about-gender-non-conformity\">non-binary<\/a>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each gender is respected and said to be part of what makes a harmonious community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who uses the term?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Indonesian society, <strong>the term Waria<\/strong> is widely used. Some transgender women don\u2019t like it and prefer the term wanita or transgender instead. However, <strong>it\u2019s not viewed with a negative connotation<\/strong> like how the term ladyboy is perceived negatively when used in the western hemisphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also not exclusive to trans women who <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/05\/what-to-expect-from-a-transgender-surgery\">had a gender reassignment surgery<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the word is Perceived<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To further expound on the word, it\u2019s not something that\u2019s discouraged to say. In Indonesia, even the local news uses the term widely. <strong>Using the word waria<\/strong> won\u2019t be a cause of offense&nbsp;towards transgender people most especially if it\u2019s used in a respectable manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even <strong>foreigners can use the word<\/strong> without any problems. A lot of establishments in the city such as cabarets and clubs cite the word waria on their doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the Indonesian people call Trans Women<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Indonesians who have a wider knowledge of transgenderism pertain to trans women as women or transgender. However, colloquially and more popularly, the term waria is what\u2019s commonly used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Acceptance of Warias in Indonesia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although they in Indonesia have a long way to go to be accepted, tolerance is present in the country. However, <strong>the situation is nowhere near close to Thailand\u2019s<\/strong>. She was caught possessing drugs with a male friend in Jakarta. 21-year old Millen looks very feminine and appears to have already transitioned both <a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/05\/what-is-transgender-hormone-replacement-therapy\">medically<\/a> and surgically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mytransgenderdate.com\/blog\/2020\/09\/what-is-lgbttqqiaap\">LGBTQIA+ groups<\/a> have condemned the government for its harsh actions. They further explained how placing Millen in a male cell further encourages the Indonesia people to act upon transgender individuals discriminatorily. Because of this, Millen was transferred to solitary confinement instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From the People<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people in Indonesia are pretty tolerant in the streets when it comes to warias. However, on social media, the majority of them are still unaccepting and <strong>intolerant against warias<\/strong>. This is reflective of how they responded on posts regarding Millen\u2019s case. Same-sex couples aren\u2019t allowed to get married and adopt children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although <strong>they are generally more tolerated than lesbians, gays, and bisexuals<\/strong>, they\u2019re still not immune to violence and harassment. Lately, they\u2019ve been experiencing a lot of discrimination mostly from sharia-supporting Muslim groups. Sadly, these groups are gaining popularity year after year for how they\u2019re dealing with transgender women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even their health is barely protected from the barriers that warias positive with HIV AIDS face when trying to seek help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>In January 2018, transgender women were arrested in the province of Aceh. They were stripped naked and had their heads shaved in public. Subsequently, <strong>the Jakarta Social Agency has declared warias to cause social dysfunction<\/strong> and has regularly conducted raids to arrest them.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Education and Employment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A waria cannot study if she chooses to dress up as a woman in school. Added to that, <strong>most warias are not employed by the majority of workplaces<\/strong> in Indonesia. This results in a lot of them working in the adult industry&nbsp;and becoming adult workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The common industries that <strong>warias partake in are <strong>selling their bodies<\/strong><\/strong>, adult work (online and offline), and entertainment. She rose to fame because of her Barbie doll looks and entertaining videos. <strong>She has over two million followers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lucintaluna_manjalita\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on Instagram<\/a><\/strong> and growing.
